Capoeira: The Ultimate Holistic Extracurricular

Greetings Ignite Family!  As we head towards a new school year, it got us thinking about all the wonderful ways capoeira complements different areas of learning.  Read on to see how we think capoeira is a great option for homeschooling kiddos!

Capoeira is an ideal extracurricular activity for homeschoolers, as it provides learning opportunities across multiple content areas.  Combining martial arts with creative movement, music, geography, history, and language.. not only is it unique and fun, but it's an incredible way to offer a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for kids.

Physical Exercise

Through capoeira, children develop their physical fitness, coordination, and motor skills. Capoeira's dynamic movements, including kicks, spins, and acrobatics, give children a challenge that's within reach, while helping them build strength, flexibility, and stamina. The fluidity and rhythm of capoeira help develop coordination and timing, honing children's motor skills and enhancing their body awareness and control.

History, Culture, &
Geography through a Social Justice Lens

In capoeira, we learn about Brazilian culture, history, and traditions. Through geographical and historical connections, we learn about the country's past and present, and celebrate capoeira's role in Brazilian culture and also within our own.  Furthermore, the art form's roots in African heritage and its connection to the history of slavery serves as a starting point for discussions about social justice and equality. 

Music

Additionally, capoeira involves music and rhythm, offering opportunities for musical exploration and creativity, making it a well-rounded and enriching activity that complements a homeschooling curriculum. By engaging in capoeira's musical aspect, homeschooling children can develop their sense of rhythm, learn to play traditional instruments like the berimbau, pandeiro, and atabaque, and even participate in group singing, fostering a deeper appreciation for music and cultural expression.

Language

Furthermore, capoeira exposes children to Portuguese, the language in which many traditional capoeira songs and commands are delivered, offering an authentic context for language learning. Through interacting with fellow practitioners and understanding the lyrics, children acquire Portuguese words and phrases, promoting language acquisition in a culturally immersive environment.

Building Community

Furthermore, capoeira fosters a sense of community and social interaction, which can be especially beneficial for homeschooled children. Working together with their capoeira peers in a supportive and inclusive environment promotes teamwork and communication skills.
